Food allergies are the immune system's response to allergens or allergens. Food allergies are experienced by 3-7% of children. The risk of allergies will be greater if the family has a history of allergies. And allergic reactions in every child and every type of allergen are not always the same.
Some foods commonly used as allergens or allergens:
- Cow's milk. In cow's milk and dairy products, there is a protein that can cause allergies, namely beta-lactoglobulin. Symptoms and reactions vary, among others, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, eczema and skin rashes. This allergy will disappear with age and maturity of the gastrointestinal tract and immune system (maturity). Children with cow milk allergy will usually be tolerant at the age of 1-3 years.
- Egg. Important allergens seen in children, especially those with atopic dermatitis (spots with red and itchy spots) that usually occur on both cheeks, may extend to the neck, arms and legs and are repeated chronic. Egg yolk is considered less allergenic than egg whites. However, the child's egg allergy is not necessarily allergic to chicken meat or chicken feathers. However, there may be an allergic reaction to it, given a vaccine that is planted in the yolk like a measles' vaccine.
- Nuts. Like, peanuts, cashew, walnuts, almonds and the like. The nature of the alegen is mild with common symptoms of itching in the throat. If there is a history of peanut allergies in the family, should not provide peanuts and other dairy products to children up to 3 years of age.
- Seafood (seafood). Most commonly causing allergies are marine fish, squid, shrimp and crab, because of the histamine content. Histamine is formed from proteins that react with enzymes formed after the death of living things. The more food is not fresh, the higher the histamine content. Allergic reactions are usually asthma, red rash and bumps.
- Fruit. Allergic reactions to fruits such as oranges, tomatoes, strawberries and kiwi are relatively often reported, but most occur at 15 months of age. Allergy symptoms are generally in the form of itching in the mouth.
